The first step towards change, is awareness!
We raise awareness of the challenges changes and issues older people face, every chance we get. It is important to also raise awareness of these issues to all ages so everyone can acknowledge and understand that just because these issues aren't on the news every night, doesn't mean they don't exist or are any less important.
We need to build a better support system for our older adults in our community, and the first step is awareness.
So if your a teacher, employer or leader who are interested in learning about the challenges and issues that our older community face, and how we can best support them overcome these, then we can help!
Age Concern Horowhenua's team are experienced at speaking to schools, Rotary clubs, businesses and faith groups. Talks can range from 10-minute “ted talks” on how we can best support our elderly, right up to hour-long in-depth discussions.
Just like donations and memberships, fundraising is a big part of what Age Concern Horowhenua relies on to continue supporting our older community.
Whether we are fundraising ourselves for events like World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, The International Day Of The Older Person or just raising money to go towards our support services, the community can help us raise funds, whether you give a donation or a part of the fundraising team - we appreciate everyone's' efforts!
So if your school, workplace or group are keen to fundraise for a cause that provides dedicated services and support to the older members of our community, then invite us to come along to your next assembly, class discussion, team meeting or function to tell you about why we do what we do and why your help is so important.
Age Concern foresee an 'Age Friendly' Community in the Horowhenua. But we cannot do it alone!
