A couple of updates for the month

Steady As You Go (SAYGo) classes

"It’s a great way to have fun, get fit & meet new people!", these classes are very popular and open to all, just come into one of the classes that have a venue, date, and time that suits you.

  • Falls are the most common cause of injury in older people.
  • Falls can lead to a significant loss of mobility and quality of life.
  • One third of people over the age of 65 fall each year!
  • Falls in older people are usually associated with weakened leg muscles and poor balance.
  • Falls do not have to be a ‘natural part of ageing’ & are DEFINETLY preventable!

Apart from out very popular classes here's some great tips from Age Concern NZ:

  • If you know you are likely to have a fall, there are some measures you can take to keep from losing your balance. These include:
  • Having a call bell or button within reach
  • Taking your time to get up
  • Asking for assistance if you need it, particularly if you feel dizzy, weak, or light-headed
  • Avoiding wet or slippery floors
  • Wearing well-fitting shoes
  • Using handrails in hallways and bathrooms
  • Using your walking aids appropriately
  • Having a night light or easily accessible light for getting up at night
  • No using an IV pole, tray table, or easily moveable object to steady yourself

Staying Safe - Classroom-based refresher workshop for senior road users

This is something I am going to put myself through, we should all know how to drive safely, and for our senior road users it can be quite a while since we had a refresher course AND, of course, we need some strategies to assist us to keep ourselves and others safer on the road, as we enter a different time with our minds and bodies.

The Staying Safe Driving Course for seniors is run by a qualified driving instructor and recommended by Waka Kotahi NZTA and is a classroom-based refresher workshop for senior road users.

We are looking for as many of you out there top get involved - contact us (pop in, phone call, email, drop us a message via this website) and we will add you to the ever-growing waitlist.

Need more convincing - LUNCH IS FREE!

Other ways to get involved

As many of you know I am relatively new to this and I want to thank each and everyone of you that have made me so welcome - members and volunteers especially. I have got my head around everything that we offer, am looking to make sure it's all easy to find (best is to come in tbh as we have all the leaflets you'll ever need AND the team are a font of all knowledge, assistance, and making things happen).

We have a gorgeous building that has 3 fantastic spaces, we are always looking for people to start groups, hire them out, use them - we're a small team and just can't have enough meetings to make sure they're in use (joke!) - this is your space, over to you, just pop- in / give me a call, 022-400 4960 / send an email admin@ageconcernhoro.co.nz.

I'll leave you with this wonderful insight into daily life, The Spinoff Essay: Bus bloke

Mostly, I wanted you to meet him because of the conviction he gives me that in a society where the top 2% and bottom 20% are now so far apart, they can’t see one another over the horizon, fairness, respect, charity and compassion, aspirations and hopes are still universally acknowledged.

Talking to Murray has taught me far more than reading any politician’s honkings about “decent, fair-minded Kiwi battlers”. They say it; Murray shows it. I hope I’ll see him on the No 8 this week.
